Turmeric or (Haldi) may have some side effects too.
Turmeric or popularly known as haldi is a yellow species that have origin from southern Asia. Since ancient times our great grandfathers, grandfathers are using it as an essential ingredient in many Indian dishes.
Most of the time we consume it for several health benefits. Turmeric is known for its healthy antioxidant properties. But keep in mind, too much of anything can be harmful too.
Although turmeric mainly consist of carbohydrates, which are starch and fibre. But it also contains several other plant compounds and nutrients in small amounts. Now let’s discuss the adverse effects of too much of turmeric.
• May promote kidney stones.
Although turmeric is an active ingredient in Indian dishes and are generally considered safe. But turmeric contains around 2% of oxalate. If one consumes high doses of turmeric, It may contribute to kidney stones. Most of the kidney stones in humans have a specific section of oxalate with calcium. So keep a check on amount of turmeric you are you are consuming.
• Gluten intolerance.
There are several varieties of commercially available turmeric powders in market. Although some good and well known brands provide proper nutritional label. But some cheaper brands are adulterated with potentially toxic ingredients that are not listed.
Clinical trials have revealed that these turmeric powders may contain cassava, starch, barley and wheat as fillers. Consuming turmeric with wheat, barley or any type of grain can cause adverse symptoms in people which include gluten intolerance.
• May cause cancer.
Sometime to give natural looking and bright yellow colour turmeric powder, additional adulterants are added. The most commonly used artificial colour in India is matinal yellow.
Health experts after clinical trials and studies revealed that matinal yellow may cause cancer and neurological disorders. Because of these side effects matinal yellow is even banned in several European countries.
• Digestive issues.
Too much of anything can cause harm to body. People with weak digestive system may experience some mild digestive issues like bloating, acid reflux, diarrhoea, food poisoning because of high turmeric consumption. According to different health authorities and experts the daily dose of turmeric should not be more then 1000 mg.
• Headache and feeling of nausea.
Mostly turmeric is quite strong and stimulates breathing and nasal cavity. People experience headache and nausea due to consumption of high dose of turmeric powder. Although these results may vary from person to person, depending upon their health structure. But those is more than 450 mg will surely show some or other effects.
