It’s a well known fact that most of the carbohydrates present in diets are starches. Basically, starches are the long chains of glucose that are found in grains, potatoes, and several other foods. But the fact is, not all the starches you eat gets digested.

Sometimes a small portion of it passes through your digestive tract unchanged and undigested. Just keeping this process in scientific and medical terms, it is resistant to digestion. This variety of starch is only called resistant starch.

• Types of resistant starch.

It should be clear that not all resistant starches are the same. Basically, resistant starch is classified in four more categories.

1. Type 1.

Mostly it is found in grains, seeds and leguminous varieties. This starch is resistant to digestion because it is bound with some fibrous cell walls.

2. Type 2.

Type 2 resistant starch is found in some starchy foods, including raw potatoes and green unripe bananas.

3. Type 3.

Type 3 resistant starch forms when certain cooked variety of food are cooled. These foods include potatoes, rice, grains, certain vegetables. The process of cooling after cooking turns some of the digestible starches into resistant starch via retro gradation.

4. Type 4.

Mostly Type 4 resistant starch is man made and formed by chemical processes.

Resistant starch just go through your stomach and small intestine undigested. Basically, it just functions like soluble fermented fibre. Eventually reaching colon where it feeds your friendly get bacteria.

Test tube studies have proven that most of the foods feed only 10% of the cells. But at the same time fermentable fibres and resistant starches feed more than 90% of cells. This variety of starch feeds the friendly bacteria inside your interest in having a positive effect on the type of bacteria as well as their number.

• Benefits of resistant starch.

Resistant starch has several health benefits on body and its metabolic health.

Resistant starch is quite effective at lowering down blood sugar levels after meals and improving insulin sensitivity.

This variety of starch has few calories than regular starch. So it clearly point towards the fact that higher the resistant starches in the food, the few calories you will consume.

Resistant starch is a super food for your digestive system. As it is known that resistant starch feeds gut friendly bacteria. Addition to this it acts as a fuel to cell lining of the colon.

Resistant starch also reduces the pH level and inflammation causes in digestive system. Inflammation is one of the most common cause of colon cancer.
