Difference between potatoes and sweet potatoes.

Several people are still confused regarding the difference between sweet potatoes and regular potatoes. Although both vegetables are tuberous root vegetables. But the difference is in appearance and taste.

Scientifically, both varieties arrive from different plant families with different nutrient compositions. Know more about the differences mentioned below.

• Potatoes.

Potatoes are vegetable from Solanaceae family if vegetable plants. The edible part of these plants are potatoes and are tubers present on roots.

Regular potatoes available in our country comes in shades of Brown, yellow and red peels but have a white or yellow flash.

Commonly used regular potatoes in India have more potassium content. They also contain compounds like glycoalkaloids, which can have anti cancer affects another beneficial effects on body.

The regular potatoes variety available in India are quite high in glycemic index. So people who have diabetes are generally recommended to avoid them.

• Sweet potatoes.

Sweet potatoes are vegetables that are from Morning Glory family, Convolvulaceae.

Sweet potatoes generally have brown skin and orange flash. But sometimes they can also come in purple, yellow or red varieties.

The macronutrient content of sweet potatoes is quite comparable to that of regular potatoes. But they are incredibly high in vitamin A content.

Moreover, sweet potatoes contain antioxidant content that can help in fighting several harmful effects in body.

Talking about glycemic index of sweet potatoes, they have slight low glycemic index than regular potatoes. But remember, baked sweet potatoes tend to have much high glycemic index then boiled. So people with type 2 diabetes can consume these in moderations.

Although sweet potatoes and regular potatoes differ in appearance and taste. But their micronutrient and macronutrient content generally remains comparable. Both varieties are quite healthy, but individuals with diabetic issues should avoid consuming them.
