Ice cream vs frozen yoghurt: Know which one is healthier.

Sometimes nothing is more satisfying than a creamy frozen treat after meals. People were looking for dessert options at grocery stores. May wonder whether frozen yoghurt is truly healthier than ice cream or not.

Generally, it is claimed that frozen yoghurt is just like ice cream, but much more healthier. Because of its low fat levels and high probiotic content. But the ingredients of the particular brand and flavour of frozen yoghurt may determine whether it’s actually healthy.

The two main ingredients that are present in ice cream and frozen yoghurts are dairy product and sweetener. Both of them may also contain some flavouring agents.

The main difference is unlike ice cream, frozen yoghurt incorporates cultured milk or yoghurt. On the other hand, cream is typically used as the base of ice cream, which is air folded into ice cream during the churning process.

• Fat content.

For proper formation of ice cream, it should contain at least 10% milk fat to be considered. But most of the ice creams contain up to 25% of milk fat. As the name suggests, ice creams have cream as the base and it is sourced from milk fat. Frozen yoghurt desserts arrive from cultured milk. Full freight frozen yoghurt typically contains not more than 5% milk fat. However, there are several low fat varieties also available that contains only 2% milk fat.

• Process of formation.

During ice cream manufacturing, cream is churned along with sugar flavouring substances and sometimes egg yolks. A good amount of air is incorporated into it so that it gives fluffiness. But for making yoghurt, milk and sugar are just heated together and then active bacterial cultures are added. It is then allowed to cool and ferment.

• Probiotic content.

Most of the times cream of ice cream is formed with pasteurised milk. So there is no beneficial probiotic content present in ice creams. Meanwhile, to culture the milk for frozen yoghurt. Pasteurised milk is fermented with a gut friendly bacteria, most of the times Lactobacillus. Unlike ice cream, frozen yoghurt is not regulated and there is no requirement of that for it.

• Nutritional content.

A commercially available normal vanilla ice cream may provide more than 140 calories in 67 grams. It will also 7 grams of fat, 16 grams of carbohydrates, 3 grams of protein. With good amounts of cholesterol, calcium, potassium and phosphorus. 87 grams of common frozen yoghurt will provide not more than 110 calories. These calories are further divided into 19 grams of carbohydrates, 3 grams of fats and 3 grams of protein. With less amount of cholesterol than ice cream. Frozen yoghurt dessert is much more beneficial than ice cream. Although ice cream and frozen yoghurts are both delicious ways to treat yourself.
